About This Chapter
In this chapter, the narrator tries to convince the reader that the events of the previous chapter were nothing more than "dumb" behavior by Tod and Henry. He admits that he was wrong to cry, and that he is still not in the best of health, so his thinking was "out of whack" . Tom and Henry took time to talk, and then Henry introduced the narrator to them. The narrator is shocked that they are leaving like this, and he asks them to share a meal or talk more about their reasons for leaving, but they do not seem to want to do so. He tells them that he already has the truth, that they held hands "all the way home," and that they have been talking on the phone all day. He asks if they were jealous, and they reply that they were not, but that they would like to do it their own way. He promises to make them cry tonight.
