About This Chapter
In this chapter, the narrator explains that he is not the kind of person who would go to such lengths to save someone. He tells Roxane that he found out about her brother's insurance, and that someone received the money. He says that he had to make a "swarming snowman" to show how much he resembles his brother. He also tells her that he doesn't plan to ever forgive her, and he'll accept that fate. He and Roxane grab each other's hands, and they both almost fall over, but Roxane manages to free her hand. She tells him that she'll wake him up when he gets out of prison. Soon after that, a letter arrives from Roxane, who says that her son, James, has gone away. James is the son of the tutor whom Roxane used to work for. He was adopted by an affluent couple and went to school at age 16. He's now a professor at a university. Roxane thanks him for saving her life, and asks him to forgive her. The next day, another letter arrives, this time from Riley. Riley says that the man who kidnapped her that day was blonde, and she tells him to wait until he's old enough to marry her.
