About This Chapter
In this chapter, James explains that he is a homosexual and that he has fallen in love with Henry. He tells Henry that he does not want to be a father to him because his father died when he was a baby, and his mother was someone who should not have been a father. He also tells Henry about the tutor whom he slept with, explaining that he was afraid that if Henry found out what he was, he would feel scared or betrayed. He apologizes to Henry for not holding him first. He says that he opened the window to send Henry away because Henry asked him if he knew his full name, and because he already knew that Henry was a homosexual. He calls Henry by his first name, Alexander, and says that Henry is very precious to him. He asks Henry if they can be a family, and Henry says that they already have their own house, and now that they have won the trial, it is one of their possessions.
