About This Chapter
In this short scene, the young narrator asks James if he can help her with a cramp in her leg. She says she doesn't know what to do with the cramp, but it's getting worse all the time. She's confused whether the cramp is real or just a dream. She asks if he's okay, and he says he is. She tells him he can't touch her all the sudden, because she's been waiting for him to do so for so long, and now it feels too bad. She goes to wash her hair, and says she'll go and wash her hands. She whimpers, and then says she just waits for the cramp to pass by, holding out her hands, like a clergyman whips himself. Then she says she feels sorry for herself because she likes him so much, and that's why she just came without even thinking about it. And then she turns her back and runs away from him so many times that summer.
