About This Chapter
Sweets have become a "salvation from loneliness" for the nine-year-old boy, who loves music and chocolate. He meets his older brother, Christian, who has won first prize in a competition for young composers. Christian tells the boy that he admires his younger brother's talent, but that he is unhappy with his father, who does not even tell him that his birthday is his. Christian says that his father worries for him, and that he has asked him to be his music teacher. The boy says that he can do whatever he pleases, but he cannot be like his brother. He says that they are going to have a party on Saturday, but his brother will not be able to attend. Christian suggests that they buy each other a souvenir of their trip, so that they can remember it.
