About This Chapter
Everyone gathers up after training to fill out their indemnity agreement and medical statement. They'll also have to explain the competition rules to the judges. This is a big deal, since it's the first time they're competing in a competition, and they don't have a lot of time to practice before the big day. Everyone asks how many meters they've written down, and the guy says he's going to go for a "safer" depth. He doesn't want to go past 50, because he'd rather be a "man" than a "snorkel" . He wants to do something that will get him a "white card" , which means he'll be allowed to compete in the next day's competition. He's not sure how to go about it, but he wants to be able to do it safely. He asks if anyone else has written down 50, and someone says no, so he goes for it. He compares it to being in a swimming pool, where you can feel like you're in the water, but you can't feel the water around you. It's like being on the beach, but without the sand. He goes on to say that he just went 20 meters in training, and he feels like he could go another 20 if he kept on going down. So, he decides to write down 50 to get a white card, even though he'm afraid he won't win the first day.
