About This Chapter
In this chapter, the young narrator is introduced to his new friend, the older sister of the shop owner. The younger sister is called "unnie," or older sister, because she is older than her mother. The older sister tells the younger sister that she will be starting her lesson the next day as scheduled. The young woman is surprised to learn that she is not sixty years old, as she had thought. She tells her that she has come all the way from the instructor's college in order to take a course on housekeeping. She says that it is nice to meet someone who is old, even if they are not as old as she is. She asks if she has gone somewhere early in the morning to prepare breakfast, and she says that she had gone to the market to buy some food. She explains that she washes up before she goes out, and when she wakes up, she immediately went out to do the same thing. She adds that she does not think it is hard to work in another country, but when she gets old, she will regret it. She compares it to living on an island, where you have to rely on the company of your husband. She wonders why other people think that she looks so unhappy, when she thinks she is very happy
