About This Chapter
It's been a while since we've seen the teacher, and now we're back to see what's up with the girl. She's really struggling with her studies, and she's not sure why. The teacher tells her to leave it to him to figure it out, since he's already helped so many students improve before he came on the scene. The girl is all, "Gee, maybe we should start working on language arts before we start worrying about math" . She doesn't even know how to spell her name in Japanese, so she gives the teacher a banana instead of a real banana . We're not sure what to make of this, but it's clear that the girl is having a hard time with school work. She wants to know why the teacher is making her study so much, and the teacher says that they're just studying language arts instead of math, since they've been studying for so long. But the girl says that she already has a banana , and that she'll eat it if the teacher's gone out for a while. So the girl decides to try to answer a reading question. She imagines that the answer to the question is "lonely" , but that's just the way it is in the text. She asks the teacher to imagine that she knows what it feels like to be lonely, and then she tells the teacher not to act like she understands what it is that makes her feel lonely. She says that the only way she can understand the answer is to read the answer key, which is the key to the answer . So, the teacher can't understand what it means to be in love, and so she asks the girl how she feels right now , a 28 year old teacher who hasn't been in love in 28 years . Um, yeah, that sounds like a lot of work, right?
