About This Chapter
In this chapter, the narrator tells us that he has two older sisters. His oldest sister is 6, and his middle sister is 7. The narrator says that his older sister doesn't think about what's going on in her life, so she decides to jump off the roof of her house. He's not sure why, but he thinks it's probably because she's afraid of what she'll do if she confronts her sister about what happened to her. He also says that he's sorry that his sister didn't come to him with her problems, but that she could have stayed in school if she wanted to. He hopes that being away from his sister will give him the chance to change. He meets his new schoolmate, who introduces him as "Naoka Ueno." The narrator is shocked to find out that she is the same girl who bullied him when he was a kid. He wishes he could be like her, so that he wouldn't have to go through what she went through. The girl tells him that she wants him to be their model for the next show, and he says that's a good idea, but then he realizes that he hasn't changed very much since then. He wonders if his sister is doing well at the hospital, where she works. He asks why she is wearing her school uniform, and she says that she was working on it when she was at school. He says that since they need it, he'll throw it away and improve himself.
