About This Chapter
The narrator and his companions arrive at the shrine, where they are greeted by a group of local girls. The girls ask the narrator questions about the shrine and its inhabitants. The narrator explains that the shrine was burned down during the Edo period and that his father also burned it down. He tells the girls that modesty is a part of his family's charm, and that he thinks of the shrine as a "moun tain" , or holy place. He also tells them about the use of aerial trams in Japan, which were first invented in the country in 1947. He asks the girls if they would like to show their thanks for visiting the shrine.
