About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a description of the town of Newkirk, in the Orkney Islands off the coast of Scotland. It's a rough, chaotic place, full of people trying to figure out what's going on. The narrator says he's just not good with maps. He's worried that people are going to try to crawl into the town's "hole" , which is basically a hole in the ground. He wonders if the people of the city are the ones who are trying to find the hole. He asks the narrator if they're looking for him, and the narrator replies that they are. He says he doesn't know if anyone could read the map, but he'll be attacked again soon. He tells the narrator that he almost ruined him for life when he tried to get the map. He also says that the people are still letting him live in the town, even though he caused all the trouble. He compares himself to a half demon, and says that he'd like to "half make her secon ond" . He wants to know what the job is, and he asks Tamura if he can introduce him to the town. Tamura tells him that the mayor is splitting up to cover the city, and Tamura says that's okay, but that he can't do it alone. He suggests that Tamura install the box on his head, and then Tamura will tell him what to do. He explains that the box is a symbol of the human spirit, and that half of the people in the world are demons, and half of them need to fall before they can be restored to normal. He adds that the only way to restore the spirit to normal is to "exorcise" it, which means to get rid of the demon's energy
