About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a flashback to the previous chapter, in which Hirokazu explains that he and the other demons have been experimenting with their powers at the hospital, but that they have not yet been able to do it in person. He is afraid that if he tries it in public, other children will be frightened of them, and he does not want to be associated with any of the "demons in this town" . He feels that it would be easier to send them to the hospital rather than to protect them. He tells the audience that he will not forgive the other men for pretending to be "tune-touka" , and that he is afraid of the damage they will do to his body if he continues to experiment with his powers in public. He says that they will make a new "shackle" that does not strain his right and body, and then they will "stab him" if he does it again. The narrator then reads aloud a message from the mayor, who warns him to beware of catburgulars. The mayor says that he has been bitten by a pox, and the narrator is glad to know that the cat burglar succeeded as "oyakume." The mayor also says that a nine-year-old boy is going to run against him for mayor in a month's time.
