About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that women are divided into two groups: those who can promise and those who cannot. The first group consists of women who are able to promise someone, and the second group is made up of "women who cant promise" . The narrator tells us that she is one of those women who cannot promise someone because she is too young to be able to do so. She says that marrying someone "when it right" , and marrying someone who doesn't feel "right" for the rest of her life , is the only way she can be happy. She compares herself to her husband, who she says is "a lot more pitiful" than she is. He tells her that he watched his wife "become a different person" after having a child, and that he asked her to raise the next child at her parents' house in Fukuoka. He says that he is glad to be talking to him, because he is "such a great guy" and he is wasted on him. He compares himself to a time machine that will arrive in ten years, and he says that if he lets it go, he will regret it. He also tells him that he and his wife got stuck in a "mismatched clumsy lifestyle" and that meeting someone who "really clicks with you" in such a big city is a "miracle." He plans to throw a surprise party for his wife.
