About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that he was going around telling everyone that he and Urasumun are todai students. The village elder asked him to give a lecture, and the narrator forgot to tell him. The narrator thanks everyone for their kindness, and tells them that they have no regrets in life. The elder tells the narrator that it is not every day that they get to see todai student. He tells him that he is not sure if he was informed at all, but that he does not know if he had any regrets at all. He says that the kids liked him, though, and that he did save him when he was drowning yesterday. He adds that the kid liked it though, because he was such an idiot. The villagers ask the narrator to help them with their summer homework, and he says that he would like to see what the guy like was like when they were children. He then tells the story of how they were all riding in a toy train together, and how he thinks the two of them have made a lovely couple ever since. He asks the narrator if there is anyone he likes, but the narrator says no, and so the others pull him up. He is sorry, he says, that it happened again.
