About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a flashback to the previous night's events. It's now been a week since the purge, and the army has apologized to the people. The narrator tells us that if the purge had gone through, the entire population would have been killed. He tells the audience that he's just lost his "crown jewel of humanity" . He wonders how people can make up for a loss like this. He asks the narrator to call him "ma'ri bell halter" , which means "friend." The narrator explains that when he first met her, she was in love with a puppy. She tells the narrator that she was leaking the story of her death to the army, the government, and all the guilds fighting over who should be blamed. She asks the two of them to help her, but they won't. She wants to expose the conspiracy against her and the rest of humanity. She says that she's going to go to save the world. She's heard about the "gears of fate," which are like gears in a game of chess. She wonders if there are more gears in the world, too, like the philosophy of automatons.
