About This Chapter
In the middle of the night, the monk notices that his brother has not yet returned. He tells his father that he has asked the soldiers to search for him, and they have agreed to do so. The monk is worried about his brother's safety, but his father assures him that he will return soon. He says that he is tired, and the soldiers can catch up, but the monk is not tired. He is afraid that the monk has escaped on a smaller path, and that the imperial court knows where he is. He knows that the emperor does not want the monk to escape, because if he stays in the sect, the emperor will be forced to kill him. He asks the monk why he is trying to hide the words of his desire for the emperor's position on his face, and he replies that arguing with the emperor is pointless, as he is just a "disposable pawn" that can be "discarded after use." The monk decides to kill the state dog, who has been testing people for poison recently, and asks the emperor to choose a gift for him to take home
