This chapter opens with a flashback to the events of the previous chapter. In this scene, we are introduced to the protagonist, who has come to meet the protagonist's "parts." The protagonist explains that he is one of the "parts" and that he wants to help the protagonist in any way he can. He feels that he has a tremendous amount of respect for the protagonist and wishes that the protagonist would take him away from the protagonist. The protagonist asks the protagonist what he is doing, and the protagonist replies that he does not want to be a part of a "robot" that acts like a human being all the time. Instead, the protagonist wants to see the "future one step ahead."
