About This Chapter
The chapter opens with the narrator explaining that the door to the house is always locked. If the door is opened, someone will enter the house through the back door. The narrator realizes that this is the normal way of things. He begins to wonder why he did it. He realizes that he only has one thing he can do, and that is to get inside. He wonders if he believes in spirits, and if he can talk later. He asks if he is capable of killing a human, and the narrator replies that he is. He tells the narrator that if he does believe in souls, then he can kill an ordinary human. He then asks if the soul in the bird's vessel can fly, but if it is in the human vessel, it will die without knowing. He says that he will die in the sky, without knowing, but in the body of a human. This is the first time the narrator has seen a human being die. He notices that the eyes of the narrator are charged with a sexual charge, and he wonders if they are aware of the presence of a spare gazelle in the house. He wants to know who created this, and asks the narrator to give him a sideways kick across the face.
