About This Chapter
In this short scene, Volger tells us that the balloon is in the wrong place at the wrong time. It's in the middle of a huge sandstorm, which means that it's surrounded by enemy territory. Volger doesn't know what's going on, but he does know that the wind is blowing in his direction. He's not sure what they're doing with the balloon. He also knows that they don't have a way to track the balloon, because the wind spits sand all over the place. They're surrounded by sandstorms all the time, and Volger can't figure out how they managed to hide the balloon in the sandstorm. The wind is so strong that it spits out everything in its path, which is like a high-precision grinder . It sounds beautiful, but it also spells disaster for mankind. The narrator also tells us about the German radar, which was developed in World War II to help track German tanks. It works like this: you can track into a rock, like a finger print, and then you can remember the exact location of the track on the rock. No one can fly, no matter how fast or how smooth they are, because no one can touch the ground. No matter how high or how fast they ride, they still have to get to the ground at a certain point. They have to track into the ground, just like a fingerprint. The memory of a track print can never be deceived. The power of future still sleeps in the body of Volger.
