About This Chapter
The next time we see the group, we're back in the sand with Susan, who's just returned from a trip to the seashore. She tells us that she's not worried about her parents' disapproval of her trip. She's excited to be back with her friends, and she wants to make the most of her time with them. Susan asks if there's any more "gospel" to tell us about, and the girl to her left passes out. She looks like a "better than baal" . Susan says she can't understand what the girl is talking about, but she does know that the girl's eyes "scan the front row" like the sun rises and sets. She also says that she can do "miraculous" things with her, and that she is seventeen years old. The girl to Susan's left is hyper-ventilating. She passes out, too, and Susan tells her she can call her "fuck" if she wants. Susan is shocked that she would be so calm. She says she has been to every single god in the world, and every one of them has done "miracles" on her. She points out that the last time there was a "miracle" on Susan was in 1920s, when there were "roomfuls" of people in black and white who were "freaking out" about what they were seeing. The narrator says that this is a long history that explains why people freak out about things like this. It's also a long time since there were so many people in the same room, and people were freaking out about what was going on in the room. So, the narrator says, "there's a
