About This Chapter
In this chapter, the Underground Man delivers a series of soliloquys, in which he laments the fact that Anna has not visited him on his birthday and that she has not come to his party. He laments that he has been legally drunk for a third time, and that his friend, baal, is quieter and more sensitive than ever. He tells Anna that baal is still in love with her, and he urges her to get him out of the room before he becomes a "fun - size snack" . He also tells her that the goddess of wisdom wants her to be like inanna and be more like baal want breakfast . The Underground Man then launches into a tirade about how he and his friends wanted to honor the "destroyer" of the world, and how lucky he is that he hasnt yet shown his mask. He asks if they are still planning to bring baal in, and they answer that they have made a "major break through" by bringing him in. He then asks why they want to see him, and the answer he gets is that they wanted to prove that he was complicit in an attempted murder and that they saw what he did to Anna. He concludes that they are not entirely stupid, but that they know how to work this out.
