About This Chapter
In the midst of his fight with the seabeast, the monk is overcome with fear and trembling. He implores the boy to stay down, but the boy refuses to do so. The monk tells the boy that his soul is still trembling, and that he would like to keep fighting, but that he must kneel before him and bow to no god or man. He says that he bears no guilt in his entire life, and kneels for the boy. The seabeast strikes again, and the monk exclaims, "God slaying strike! How is this possible?" The monk explains that he has been fighting with his saber all along, and he has obtained the "guardian divinity" . He explains that the monk's way of doingmination is not suitable for him, as he already has his own way. If the monk does not want to learn his way, he is on the wrong path. If he does manage to complete his training, he will be subject to the wrath of the gods. He asks the boy if he can leave now, but he says that the boy seems to be pursuing the "Way of Emotionless Godhood" , which is a forbidden path.
