About This Chapter
In this short scene, Bai tells her family that she has come to celebrate her brother's birthday. She tells them that she had planned to wear a dress to the party, but when she saw that her brother was wearing a cake, she decided to change her clothes. She asks her brother if he is up for a favor, and he tells her that he wants to give her a cake for her birthday. He says that he has never seen a boy so obedient, and that he is sure that this girl will be able to teach her children well. Bai tells him that the girl is good, but that she is from a lowly family and that if she marries him, he will not be given a position of power in the family. Bai says that she looks a little uncomfortable, and her brother tells her to eat cake and not to drink hot tea. She says that her legs are paralyzed, and she is afraid that if her legs were not paralyzed, she would have felt the pain. He asks if she is saying she is lying, and his mother tells him to calm down. They are not fighting, he says, and they are not quarreling. He is a year older, and needs to be "more reasonable"
