About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that the Underground Man has been living underground for the past few hundred years. He's not sure how much longer he'll live, but he does know that his son has not changed at all. The Underground Man thanks his father for taking good care of his son, who is just like him. Everyone comes to visit him, and he makes a cake for them. He tells them that his mother is an excellent cook, and that she is the scary one in his house. He curses his father and tells him to stop talking too much. He says that he thought he was a powerful man, but now that he can see him, he is just a "bean sprout." He tells him that he is a god, and if he knows what is good for him, then he should get out of this place. He calls him a "weak asshole" and says he is lucky that he got to live so long. He asks if he really knows him. Then he asks why he doesn't recognize him anymore, and then he says he just got lucky. He also says that it's fine that he still remembers him, because he can probably count on him to be an old friend
