About This Chapter
In this chapter, the reader is introduced to the "new" Jesse and his dog. Jesse is now a grown-up man, and he realizes that he is responsible for his own behavior. He realizes that his actions are the result of his "blood, sweat and tears" , but he also realizes that "this world is not 'black and white'" . Jesse realizes that killing the two people he loves will only make things worse. He tells the dog that he will be free, and the two of them begin to talk. Jesse says that he does not care what he was in the past, and that today he is "ending it" with Jesse and the dog. He says that there is "a good chance" that Jesse will not be the one who is killed.
