About This Chapter
In this short scene, Hirokazu and Todano discuss the coming-of-age ceremony, which is to take place on the following day. Hirokazuma is planning to rent a kimono for her daughter's coming of age, and Toda is going to rent one for herself. As they are discussing the finer details of the kimono, Toda asks Hirokaze to pick out one for her, and he agrees to do so. Toda thanks her profusely for taking care of her daughter, and she says that she is glad to have her daughter in law, because law is " responsible" . She tells Toda that her daughter has been telling her about the ceremony every week, and that she hopes to see her later. Todino asks if he has seen the notice that their next lecture has been canceled, and to his surprise, Hirokasuma replies that he has. He then asks Toda if he can join them for lunch outside, and when Toda tells him that he will not be able to join them, he says that since his last name is Hiro, he is happy to have his first name mentioned. The two men discuss the crowded cafeteria, where they are forced to eat lunch with other upper-classmen. Todasuma says that they could always eat at the lecture hall instead of the cafeteria, but they can't because there are so many people there. He says that he was about to eat and tell them to make their own food, but then he realized that there was no way to make it without preservatives. He tells Todasumida that they have been fighting every day since he was a junior in high school,
