The chapter opens with a soliloquy by the Governess, in which she tells Ming-ling to put aside his extra tutoring and to take a night's sleep in her house. She is worried about her relationship with Ming, and she wants Ming to stop flirting with her. She tells him that she has lost her first kiss with Ming and that Ming has changed greatly in the past few weeks. She also tells Ming that she will send a message to Ming's mother that she is staying at her friend's house for the night before she goes to sleep at Ming-ing's. Ming says that he will prescribe her some appetite stimulants. He tells her that she needs to take medicine, but that she should not worry about taking medicine since she has not taken any. He also tells her to sleep soundly, and to be patient.
