In this chapter, the narrator tells us that he has sent a picture of Jack to Scott, but he has not responded. The narrator then tells us about a time when he and his friend, Anna, went to eat porridge together. Anna was about his age, and she was sitting alone drinking porridge when the narrator came up to her and asked her to give him a taste. Anna hesitated a little, but agreed out of politeness. Anna then tells the narrator that she and Jack have been practicing judo together for the past eight years, and that they are going to fight each other in the future.
