About This Chapter
This chapter's epigraph comes from a conversation between Bulgar elder Bi and his son-in-law, Sam. Bi asks Sam if he's aware of his son's crimes, and Sam says he'll beat him again if he doesn't stop. Bulgar tells Bi that he was punishing the people who deserved it, and that Sam's crime is even worse than Bulgar's. The elder Bi tells his son that Bulgar wants to make his clan famous again, and he wants to see how Bulgar will make this happen. The master of the scholar institution gets furious at Bulgar leaders and punishes all of them. He also pays double what they owe, and gives free treatment to those who are physically injured.
