About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a description of Delia's new home, where she is staying with her grandparents. She is the only daughter of the family, and her parents are old and poor. Delia was the only child in the house, and they were fond of her, but the master brought her back to give her some comfort. The grandparents tell Delia that they regard her as their own son, and that she is their daughter, in law. They tell her that if they knew she was the cause of her daughter's death, they would have killed her. They ask her why she is wearing so little, and she tells them that there is a price on her head. She says that she has bard hill, which means that she will have to pay a large sum of money to find out what has happened to her daughter. She asks her granddaughter why she doesn't go and fetch her husband back for dinner. She tells her that she knows that the smith family will help her find out, but that they won't be able to help her anymore because they don't trust her. She also tells her granddaughter that she can't ask her husband about his family, because he knows everything about her, and he knows nothing about her. He asks her to come forward and tell him about her family, but she refuses to do so, saying that it is a woman's duty to tell her husband what she has to say.
