In this chapter, the reader is introduced to the concept of "teams of two." In other words, a group of two people must work together in order to defeat a single enemy. In this case, the team consists of one person who is a member of the special forces and one who is not a member. This is a test to see who can defeat the enemy faster than the other person, and it is a way of weeding out those who can't survive on the battlefield until they've defeated the enemy. The other person is the one who has made the mess in the first place, and he apologizes for it. He tells the other students that the class is a combat-based class, so he'll be keeping an eye on them if they work in pairs. The only girl in the class doesn't like to work with him because she's a "dry husk" of a human. He also tells her that he bought her a drink, but she refused to drink it because she didn't know how to do it. She turned into "a dry husk of human" . He then tells the students that he's going to lose his job at the school because of his mistake, and that the other student, shirashino, is also at risk because he made the same mistake. The two students agree that they have walked a dangerous road to get to this point, and if they don't keep this secret, they'll all be kicked out of the school.
