About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that the "Knights of the Apocalypse" are not deer or dogs, but rather "kellie" , a "mysterious beast" who dwells in the "deepest of hell" and who is said to be a "serpent of the apocalypse" . The dog, however, is not a deer or a dog, but a "magnificent beast" that has been said to dwell in "the depths of hell." When the dog bites him, the knight shrinks to the size of a "cernunnos," the horns of which are "hard as garnet." The dog is not able to find the knight, and the knight exclaims that he is not dead, but merely a "long nap." He then accuses the dog of lying to him once, and says that he was not a hunter at all, but instead a "hunter-of-the-apocalypse." He tells the dog that he wanted to enter the idol, but that the barrier surrounding the village prevented him from doing so, and that the knight was a "Knight of the Apostolate." He asks the dog to give him the crystal, but the dog refuses, saying that he will release the crystal only when he kills a child.
