About This Chapter
Beauty and the Belle's Tale begins with the story of a little girl who was born to a couple of loving parents. They had everything a girl could want, but they never found out about her mother's death. The girl's father never mentioned it to her, and she never knew what happened to his mother. Beauty wonders if Beauty's story is a retelling of her own story, or if it's just a new version of the story she's heard before. She's the only person in the village who wants to read a new book. She asks the girl where she ran off to, and the girl tells her that she went to two cities in Italy, but that she'd like to read any old ones she likes. She also tells the girl that her library makes the village feel big, and that she makes the town feel like a big part of the world. Beauty tells her father that he's a strange girl, and wonders how he managed to fool the entire village where she was. She tells him that she thinks her mother would have wanted her to stay safe in the small town, and asks him to stop worrying about her. He tells her to make sure that she gets home before dark, and to bring a rose every year. He also tells her not to worry about the washing, and not to try to confuse him with foreign words. Beauty asks if she can give her advice about the village, and he says that they're not going to trust him. He wants to teach the girl to read, but he doesn't want to marry her, because he wants to make the world a better place.
