About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that he's been in love with the girl since the beginning of the novel, and he begs her to come with him to the underworld. He tells her that he has some plants that will help her forget her sorrow, and that she can try them. The narrator says that he doesn't know how to get her, but he promises that he will get her whatever she wants. He's afraid to meet her, though, because she's not used to the cold, damp, and dark environment of the underworld, so she'll have to live with it for a long time. She says that the wind will make her mortal body feel worse than death, and she wonders when it's going to sweep over here. She asks if the bamboo demon is a hydrangea, and the narrator says he is. He explains that the spiritual ring can only bring back the dead, but that huang-aotian wants to hold him back so that he can get some information. He says that even the god of the garden can bring the dead to life, so why didn't he use the four demons to do it? The narrator asks if this is the funniest joke he has ever heard. He asks if he saw the blood on his hands and the chains on the ground. The cause of this, he says, is humans. He apologizes for not getting the ring for her, and says he never wanted her to take any risks for him.
