The scene opens with a flashback to the beginning of the novel, when Lan is asked to work extra hours in order to attend an event at the company. He is shocked to learn that some of the company's employees have sent him gifts and flowers in advance of the event, and that he has left the gifts in the office. He tells Lan that he can deliver the message to his girlfriend, but that she is not available at the moment. Lan tells him that he respects his choice and hopes that he will accept the gift, but he warns him not to tell anyone about the event. He also warns him to leave Lan alone if he wants to protect her.
