About This Chapter
In this chapter, we are introduced to a new character, a young man named John de Guiche. He is the protagonist of the story, and he is the son of the protagonist's father. He was born in the aristo-maternity ward, which is where the protagonist was born. He tells his father that he wishes he could go back to his childhood home, where he would be able to "teach good manners" to the "ignorant paleo baboons" who live there. He also tells the protagonist that he will have to "punch in" at the "correction center" to teach good manners to the baboons. John tells him that he is making him lose his appetite, and that they will then freeze his food and send it to the anecho - maternity ward, where they will be delivered. He says that this is just "robot logic" and that he plans to use it to "push out" his stomach to make it bulge even more than it already is. The protagonist then tells his brother that he has just witnessed an "immanent birth" in which the protagonist is carried away by her father, her guardian, and her ex-minister. They are allowed to enter the ship, and they are told that they are to proceed to surgery immediately. John says that they can take off their holo masks and put their halos in the room. He asks his brother to stand over him and tell him how much it excites him. He then tells him to start the operation on the baby, and to wake up the subject. He orders the protagonist to carry out his orders immediately, or he will "remove your memory banks" and put them in a sewer.
