About This Chapter
This chapter opens with a description of the smell of synthetic pearl. It's a synthetic pearl, and it smells like it's going to go to the moon. The narrator tells us that this is the first time he's smelled such a thing. He tells us he'll be keeping an eye on the girl and will show her around the moon's facilities. He also tells her that she's supposed to come to a meeting at six o'clock in the afternoon. He says that he already has a message for her from the prince, and that she should come to the meeting. He'll also give her a tour of the pearl factory, which he says is "pieces of your tummy" . He adds that they're using the pearl for "arrow and spearheads" , which is a fancy way of saying that they use the pearl to make weapons out of it. He doesn't know how to tell the difference between the natural pearl and the synthetic one, but he does know that the pearl is unstable, so they use it to make guns and other projectiles. They're also using it as a "test site" for human synthesis, which they call "watery" because humans are made up of "70 percent water . . the fluttery, white . scummy thing ."
