About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that the smell of the moon remains the same as before the moon's landing. He compares the smell to that of a jellyfish. The narrator says that he's glad that he can swim on his own now, because it's a burden. He also says that the sea slugs are jealous of the jellyfish's cuteness. He says that according to the legend, the moon was once home to humans. They survived on land for five years, but then they fled to the ocean. They divided into three parts: the spirit, the flesh, and the bone. This is the origin story of the narrator's people, he says. He adds that they have inherited their ability to weave knowledge through reproduction and death. He asks why they have to fight for their and their people's lives. He doesn't understand why the people on the moon have a thirst for battle, but he feels that they can do so with or without the spirit. He wants to know when he can return to the moon.
