About This Chapter
Kmoto tells Ruchika that he has heard rumors that a young woman from a "prestigious family" is on her way to the mountain. He says that he left a "large sum of money" to help someone, and that they treat him like a "bad guy" because of the money. He suspects that the young woman is trying to "render our relationship unstable" . He adds that the steely lady "nanase" and the chairman of the "otonashi business" have been trying to contact him, but he has been able to get a "handful" of information from them. He wonders if this young lady is "scared" and says that it is the star he was born under that frightens him. He asks what happened to the three men who fell to their deaths. The police say that the men were camping on the mountain when they fell. They left their belongings at the site, with no sign of being searched. The men had been friends of a woman they knew in college. They told him that she wanted to "do something on that mountain" when she was dead. They also said that they were afraid of being attacked by animals in the dark, but there is no evidence to this effect. They say that they had been there to honor the memory of the woman they had known in college, who had wanted to do something on this mountain when she died. The three men were too late for them to help, so they drove them off the cliff. They carry the bag and wait for the police to finish their investigation. They ask the young man if he is reluctant to leave them behind. He replies that he is, but that if he were to kill him, it would be a "clear violation of natural order." He says he would not kill the woman because he knows what she would do if he did.
