About This Chapter
The artist, who goes by the name of Ksakuragawa, is shocked to learn that the police are on their way to arrest him for the murder of his brother-in-law, who was found dead with his head chopped off. He explains that the guillotine was invented in the 18th century in France, and until that point beheadings had been done largely by executioners using a sword or an ax. The police never came to his house, he says, and he's not sure what's going on. He's been hanging out with a girl who's in college, but he doesn't know if she's his friend or not. The girl, he tells us, is actually a friend of his own, and they're just hanging out. The artist says that he was going to draw a picture of a gallows and make sketches of it along the way, but the girl gave him the impression that he'd be looking for something that didn't belong to "lucky cats" . He says that the girl is "cloaked in an omen" of death, and that she probably wouldn't allow him to draw her. He adds that he hasn't done a lot of research on the guillotine, but that he has a body-clap guillotine that he used to test it on himself, and it's never been used. When the police arrive, they find Kr's brother, sadao Asama, dead in a room. K r had pushed him away from Kjiro for a long time, and sadao had been coming to him for money for years. He had been asking for money ever since, and K jir had tried to get rid of him, but K R pushed him out of the house. The authorities decide that the cause of death is the same as that of the victim, and the time of death matches the time and place of death of the murder. The guillotine, the artist says, was never used to execute people, but it was used to chop off heads in other cases, like when an executioner would use a katana instead of a guillotine to chop a person's head off. This is the first time the guillotine has been used to behead a person, so it looks like it was invented to be used in this case. The man who killed his brother was also killed by the guillotine , so the police don't
