In this chapter, we learn that Oswald's experiments at Merli Joa ruins were completely innocent, and that Oswald himself was responsible for the crime. Oswald is overjoyed that his sister is safe, and he begs to be let out of prison. He wonders when he will be able to see either his father or sister. Oswald begins to suspect that he is going insane, and begins to worry about the growths on his body. He asks the doctor to expose Oswald to the condition, and to see what happens. The doctor agrees, and Oswald explains that he was a guinea pig, and was given the maskets to see if he could survive on his own. Oswald tells us that his father and other expedition members all died intentionally for the purposes of the mysterious maskets. He tells Oswald that the masks were "nightshade plants" with poisonous roots, and says that Oswald is "shit out of luck" finding a cure for them.
