About This Chapter
The monster tells the audience that he has a special ability that allows him to pick out "monsters" from the crowd. He says that he almost never sees them in public, but that one day, someone comes to him and wants to know what he's up to. He tells her that she's going to have to go home with him. He's sorry, he says, but he doesn't want to go back to the cops, who picked him up one year ago. The monsters, he tells us, kill people for food. They all yell at him, without even standing themselves. He can tell them apart by looking at their faces. He knows that the world is full of unnatural things, and he knows that humans and monsters aren't the same thing. The monster says that humans are liars, and that he knows what they're supposed to be. He also says that the first time he saw you, he saw a hole in the wall where the monster had climbed in. He thinks that the scars on the wall are proof that the monster is human. He asks the audience to stop talking to him, and to get out of the way so that he can grab the knife and break the monster's jaw with it. He promises that he'll take the knife apart and use it to break the jaw of the monster. He explains that he saw an animal one day on the road, and it was so sad that he threw it in the trash can. He buried it in a tree.
