About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a description of the hungarians, a group of asteroids that orbit the moon. The chapter begins with a discussion of the dangers facing the nursery school, which is in the process of being destroyed by the hangarians. The nursery school's director, Caius Martius, tells the audience that the school has no choice but to rescue the children from the hangingarians if it is to survive. Martius tells the crowd that the only way to save the children is to kill the hangarios themselves. He tells them that they will grow up to be "rotten criminals" if they are allowed to escape. The audience is shocked by Martius's statement that he does not want to fight the hangingarios. He says that he only wants to feel "intoxicated freedom" of exceeding his "limits." Martius reminds the audience of the story of spartacus, a Roman slave who led a revolt against the Roman Empire. He became a slave and fought in battle against the emperor. He was captured and killed by the emperor, but he refused to give in to the emperor's demands. He wanted to help the children of Rome.
