About This Chapter
The next day, the pirates see that the town has been destroyed. The captain of one of the ships tells them that the pirates have captured the leader of the ship and that he can bring the pirates' ships back to the port. The pirates ask the captain to tell the crew that the leader is a friend of theirs, but the captain refuses to tell them. He says that he will probably be tortured, killed, or captured. He tells the captain that he has heard nothing about a trap, but that they should tell the pirates that they have allies and that they can return the ships to port. This will make the pirates more loyal to the prince, and they will be able to break the peace between the prince and the king. They will need more allies in the future, he says, and he suggests that they ask the governor of the island to be acting governor. This appointment will make Gurazeh more favorably disposed to the king's highness, and the pirates will need capable allies like him. They have no choice, says the captain, but to ask him to watch while he deals with the situation. He asks the captain if he has any idea what such a fate would be, if he had to have the captain paint his portrait. He replies that the man may look refined, but he is a "sorceress" far from the east. He adds that he knows that the king has some gold in his treasure chest, and that if the pirates split the treasure, they can split it between them.
