About This Chapter
In the midst of the battle, a masked man named Aramis enters with his men. Aramis asks the masked man why he has followed him, and Aramis replies that he has no orders from Aramis's "highness." The masked man tells Aramis that he is under no orders, and that he and his men are under no threat from anyone. He says that Aramis is a "third - rate painter" and that the arts will only make the arts " wilt." Aramis says that they should have some kind of etiquette for their job, which is to trail "hilmes" in secret, to find out who he is plotting against. The masked men leave, and the man asks Aramis to lend his heroism to his descendant, the son of Aramis. The man says that the sword Aramis carries is the "treasured sword" of the "reverendous king" , and he says that he would like to take it back and demonstrate the correct line of kings to those who have usurped the throne.
