About This Chapter
The next morning, Darnay arrives at the fortress, which houses 3,000 men and 35,000 soldiers. Darnay tells Narsus that he has been honored by the king's highness to see how well the soldiers have been trained. He says that Darnay needs a "soothing influence in his life" . He tells him that he will be taking his rest outside Darnay's door. He asks for a "blan" , which is a small piece of paper that can be carried around in a person's hand. Darney says that it would be a good idea if Darnay married his daughter and gained the power that came with being related to the Queen . Now that he knows his true intentions, he says, he cannot leave Darnay to his own military force. If Darnay intends to turn the men against him, then there is nothing he can do. He finds a mixture of sap squeezed from a tree and aromatic oil and poppy leaf. He knocks on the door. It is written in the language of the lusitians, and Darnay says that he cannot read the script. The scrip gives Darnay two conditions. The first is that he make Darnay his future queen. The second is to support his highness and liberate the kingdom from the Pars. He will either support Darnay or follow his own desires for power. He can either offer his head in return for a reward, or he can offer the soldiers his head and offer them a reward. The djinns are whispering that he should stick his foot out of the window.
