About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that the Duke of Caius Martius and his men have been defeated by the forces of the King of Spain, and that the King has fled to the island of Leuthenia. The Duke asks the girl if she knows of any Spaniards who were captured and sold as slaves three years ago. The girl says that she does not know, but that she heard rumors that the king and the prince have gone missing. She tells the girl that the soldiers are going to capture the prince, and the girl is horrified at the news. She says that the prince is a walking cause for the Spanish army, and they know that she is hiding out in the village. She imagines that if she were the prince and wanted to find him, she would set a village on fire, and then warn him that if he did not show himself, he would be responsible for the deaths of innocent villagers.
