About This Chapter
The scene opens with a flashback to the fall of the Pars kingdom. The Pars king, Raw, has returned from the Crusades with his golden chariot, but the other king, Osroes, kneels on the ground and swears obedience to Raw's command. Raw has left his oud behind, and Raw vows to donate all of his wealth to the gods. Raw asks where the queen of Pars is. The queen is rumored to have been engaged to a prime minister of Badakhshan, but that man was killed by Raw himself. Raw wonders if Raw is plotting something, and wonders if he could give his all for the kingdom after all. Raw feels that the queen is a "scarecrow" who brings misfortune upon all men involved with her, and he wonders if she is some sort of "sniper" . Raw worries that the king oflusitania has torn out the tongues of the scholars who proclaim that there is no god, and that the men who meet secretly in church have been "impaled" on red hot metal. Raw is worried that Raw has been tricked into marrying the queen, and asks where he can find him
