In this chapter, we are introduced to a number of characters, including the schoolmistress, the school nurse, the student, and the student's companion, Suzuka. We learn that the school's rules prohibit students from eating breakfast, lunch, or even sleeping in class, but the school does allow students to sleep in their rooms as long as they eat breakfast and lunch. Suzuka is upset that she has not been able to bring lunch to class because she was running late, but Suzuka assures her that she is loyal to the "three great appetites" : eating, sleeping, and consuming.
