About This Chapter
After seven years of being in love with Ganymede, the narrator decides to "live for myself now" . He realizes that he has wasted all of his time with the man he loves, and he wants to live for himself now. He wants to be able to do whatever he wants without worrying about what others think of him. He says that liking someone will make you happy and sad at the same time, and if they are angry at him, you will lose all of your appetite. He also says that he doesn't know what he should do, but he does know that he is not willing to lead a life like this anymore. The narrator says that if he has a "slight shred of feelings" for him, then he should let him go. He promises that he will never let him live like this again, and that he won't "look for anyone else" and will not lose his temper. He vows to be "in love with me" and to "remain in love" with him, and says that whatever he desires will definitely be his. If he wants a vacation, he will accompany him. There are only seven to eight people on the island, and everyone else is employed by the narrator. Everyone else has been waiting for the narrator to leave because he is on vacation.
